Amazon Has Surprisingly Cut Hundreds of Jobs in Its Alexa Department

Big tech powerhouse Amazon has surprisingly cut several hundred jobs in its Alexa Department per reports. This move is very surprising as much of the tech industry views virtual assistant technology as an emerging segment that is expeditiously expanding rather than contracting. For years, Amazon has proven to be at the forefront of emerging technologies.

Amazon’s Alexa is its flagship virtual assistant technology. As reported by Tech Crunch, Amazon originally purchased much of this technology back in 2013 when it purchased a Polish speech synthesizer company named “Ivona.” This purchase was largely seen by the tech industry as a way for Amazon to counter and compete with Apple’s Siri.

Fortune is reporting that the jobs were eliminated as a result of some initiatives no longer being pursued and because Amazon has decided to shift more of its resources into artificial intelligence. This year alone, Amazon has cut over 27,000 jobs. Fortune is further reporting that these Alexa Department job cuts will impact Amazon employees in the United States, Canada, and India.
