Duke Football: HC Mike Elko Responds to Texas A&M HC Opening Rumors

Texas A&M University recently fired their head football coach Jimbo Fisher. Fisher led the Texas A&M Aggies’ football team from 2018 till November 2023 when he was surprisingly fired mid-season. The vacant Texas A&M head coach position is regarded as the current top opening in the country, and in general is one of the more coveted head coaching positions given Texas A&M’s willingness to financially embrace the NIL-era along with their SEC membership. As a result of this head coaching vacancy’s prestige and high-profile, there has been extensive speculation as to who would replace Fisher as the leader of the Texas A&M football program.

Due to his success at turning around the Duke football program, fans and college football analysts have identified Duke head coach Mike Elko as a possible replacement for Fisher. Elko was recently asked about his interest in the Texas A&M head coach position and he publicly denied the rumors by saying that “[m]y family’s very happy at Duke.”

In my opinion, Elko’s response seems like a pretty definitive denial of interest at this point. Other candidates that have been identified as possible replacements include University of Oregon’s head coach Dan Lanning, Detroit Lions' head coach Dan Campbell, University of Colorado Boulder’s head coach Deion Sanders, among others.
